Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn’s son, Wyatt Russell, has made a name for himself in Hollywood.
After an injury caused his professional hockey career to come to an end in his mid-20s, Wyatt made the leap to the big screen.
"That was taken away from me, but I feel like it was fate, a godsend because I wasn't going anywhere in hockey," he told the Times Colonist in 2018.
Wyatt has starred in several TV shows and films since hanging up his ice skates and landed a lead role in the 2023 Apple TV+ series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters alongside his famous dad.
"For me, it was a wonderful opportunity to get to work with Wyatt," Russell told Entertainment Tonight in November 2023. "I started watching him just as an actor, observing him like we do in life. That was really interesting — I started seeing things about him that I [see in myself]."
The series, which is based on Legendary Television’s MonsterVerse, isn’t the first project Wyatt’s starred in with one of his parents. When he was a kid, he had small roles in Russell and Hawn's films Escape from L.A. and Overboard.

"Learn your lines. Show up on time. And don't be a jerk," he told the Times Colonist of the best advice his Hollywood heavyweight parents gave him.

He grew up around movie sets
With both of his parents as actors, Wyatt spent part of his childhood on various movie sets they were working on.
“What I took away from being on set with you wasn’t so much, ‘This is so much fun, and this is so great and you make money.’ I took away that you have to work really hard to make it work, and it was very stressful,” he said in a joint interview with his father for The Rake.
While acting was at the forefront of his parents’ professional lives, Hawn and Russell were intentional about leaving work at the door.
“When [Kurt] would come home or my mom would come home, no one ever talked about acting or the day. They came home to their kids and we had hockey and baseball and watching Kings games and doing stuff with your family; they had an amazing ability to turn off the switch and so I never grew up with some sort of regard for film because it just wasn’t what we had fun doing,” he recalled while speaking at 92NY in November 2023, per The Hollywood Reporter.
He has famous siblings
Hawn and Russell welcomed Wyatt in 1986, joining their three children from previous relationships. The blended family of six includes Wyatt’s siblings: Boston Russell, Oliver Hudson and Kate Hudson. The siblings have been photographed together on red carpets over the years and frequently spend the holidays at Hawn and Russell's Colorado home.
Wyatt seems to be especially close to Kate, previously revealing to PEOPLE that he got emotional when she announced she was expecting her third child in 2018. “I was happy. I was teary-eyed because I know how badly she wanted a girl,” he said.

He played professional hockey
Sports run deep in Wyatt’s family, as his father was a professional baseball player and his grandfather, Bing Russell, owned the league’s Portland Mavericks. While Wyatt enjoys the pastime, his true passion is on the ice. It all started when he was 3 years old after his dad took him to an ice skating rink for fun while his mom was filming in Toronto.
"It actually is my first vivid memory. The feeling of that glide, I loved it," Russell told the NHL. "My dad went up to the ticket counter and asked how much to buy skates. I went home and he put me in a league when I was four. It was the only thing I wanted to do."
He continued playing hockey throughout his youth, with his family even relocating to Vancouver when he was in high school so that he could play for the Richmond Sockeyes of the Pacific Junior Hockey League. He went on to play professionally in Europe, first for a club in Germany, then Groningen of the Dutch league, but persistent hip issues forced him to retire in 2010.
He is an actor
After his hockey career ended, Wyatt pivoted and joined the family business on the big screen. One of his first major roles hit close to home as he landed the part of a hockey player in Judd Apatow’s film This Is 40.
"The worlds colliding was surreal," Wyatt told the NHL in 2012. "[Hockey] was something I wanted to do for a few more years. Part of my process of re-entering reality was just letting go. A year ago I still would preface that I used to be a hockey player but now I'm an actor. Now it's much easier for me to just say I'm an actor."
Wyatt went on to star in various projects, including Overlord, Under the Banner of Heaven, Lodge 49 and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, before playing one of the main characters in the Apple TV+ series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters alongside his father. In the series, both Russell and Wyatt play an Army officer named Lee Shaw across two different timelines.
"We were being given this opportunity to play the same person, as opposed to the father and son, so we started hammering away at it and saying, 'Let's make this good!' " Wyatt told Entertainment Tonight.
Wyatt has also been confirmed to star in the 2025 Marvel movie Thunderbolts. “I have confidence it’s gonna be good,” he said while appearing at the 92NY. “But it’s not a straightforward Marvel movie as you’ve seen in the past,” he teased.
He met his now-wife on set
Similar to his parents’ first encounter, Wyatt met his now-wife, actress Meredith Hagner, on set. The two starred in the 2016 film Folk Hero & Funny Guy, where Wyatt played the role of Jason while Hagner played Bryn, his best friend’s love interest.
Wyatt is proud of his leading lady, who has appeared in Royal Pains, In Plain Sight, CSI: Miami, Search Party, Veep and more, previously telling PEOPLE Now, “She’s a fantastic actress and also my girlfriend!”
He married Hagner in September 2019
After dating for around two years, Wyatt proposed to Hagner in Colorado over the Christmas holiday in 2018. “The love of my dang life proposed to me,” Hagner captioned the post, showing off her new bling. “He is the best guy in the world.”
The pair returned to the scenic setting the following year to tie the knot in a Western-style themed wedding in September 2019. The groom chose an all-black ensemble that was studded with silver snaps and accessorized with a chunky silver necklace dotted with blue and amber-colored stones for the ceremony. He was also seen posing with Kate and Oliver, both of whom also went all-out in dressing for the theme.
He and his wife traveled in a converted van while expecting their first child
While expecting their first child, Wyatt and Hagner hit the road in their converted Mercedes Sprinter van, Carnella, which was featured in the April 2021 issue of Vogue. Their home on wheels includes a blond-wood interior and is fully equipped with all the necessities, including a stovetop, dining banquette, modular seating and sleeping areas.
“Vacations were always a little difficult because we have to plan last-minute because of our jobs,” Russell told the publication, highlighting the convenience of an RV. Hagner also noted that as soon as their first child arrived, they planned on bringing him on the road with them.
"I mean, as soon as we can get our new van constructed, we're going to be on the road with him. That'll be a whole new set of adventures," she said.
He has two children
Wyatt and Hagner revealed they had welcomed their first child, son Buddy Prine Russell, in March 2021. Making the announcement in an Instagram post, the new mom shared that the experience had been “nothing short of magic."
A little over two years after her son arrived, Hagner shared a funny look back at her early days as a new mom with a look at her disheveled hair, joking about how "motherhood is so easy for me."
"Just a reminder that motherhood is so easy and the newborn stage is definitely a perfect time for hair extensions (flashback to the early days with my now 2-year-old)," she captioned the funny Instagram Reel.
The couple announced in November 2023 that Buddy would become a big brother as they were expecting baby No. 2. Wyatt shared with E! News that Buddy was "prepared as you can be" for his new role, and he “just kind of rolls with the tide and see what comes."
Their second child, Boone Joseph Russell, was born in February 2024. Hanger announced the news in an Instagram post, sharing a photo of her and Wyatt kissing as she held their newborn in a hospital bed.
"Boone Joseph Russell. Born Feb 13, a week before his due date. 8 pounds 3 oz of heaven. Hearts overflowing," she wrote in her caption.
