The approach your surgeon uses will depend on the issues being corrected. The open approach allows a change in the shape of the internal framework supporting the nose while retaining its strength, which allows confident correction of the deformity without fear of future collapse or pinching of the nose during the healing period. Our surgeons almost always perform revisions of the nasal tip using the open method. In general, if changes to the appearance of the tip are more than minor, they prefer the open approach.

What Kind of Anesthetic Will Be Used?

Dr. Mustoe and Dr. Sinno typically use local anesthesia with sedation for rhinoplasty. They find that nausea is minimized, and the postoperative phase is smoother which minimizes swelling and bruising.

How Long Does It Take To Recover From a Rhinoplasty?

Patients typically can return to work, school, and normal activities in approximately 7 days. Following the procedure, the nose is splinted for about a week to stabilize it and aid in proper healing. While everyone’s experience will be unique, Dr. Mustoe’s and Dr. Sinno’s patients typically benefit from a much more comfortable and shorter recovery than the average rhinoplasty patient. Their techniques minimize tissue damage, bruising, and bleeding—therefore, their patients have less swelling, usually do not require nasal packing, and can feel good about their appearance as soon as the splint is removed. • Apply an Ice pack over your eyes - on for 15 minutes, off for 5 minutes - for the first 8 to 12 hours after surgery.
• Sleep propped up with 2 to 3 pillows or in a recliner for the first 3 days.

Does Rhinoplasty Leave a Scar?

Closed rhinoplasty scars are not visible as they are placed only inside the nostrils. Open rhinoplasty scars are very small and designed to be hidden along the columella, the thin strip of tissue between the nostrils. You may have a very faint, very small line that is typically barely visible, especially when closed with detailed attention to the sutures.

What Is Revision Rhinoplasty?

Approximately 1/3 of the rhinoplasty procedures performed at our practice are revision rhinoplastyprocedures to correct undesirable outcomes from previous rhinoplasties performed elsewhere. Sometimes our revision patients have had as many as 3 or 4 previous surgeries. Knowledge of the problems created from previous surgeries has given the doctors the experience to avoid these problems in their primary rhinoplasty procedures.

A revision rhinoplasty procedure is usually more involved and may take longer than an initial rhinoplasty. It can involve harvesting cartilage from the ear or rib, and fascia grafts from the temple. Dr. Mustoe and Dr. Sinno are able to do virtually all of these procedures under local anesthesia with sedation, with similar advantages in reduction and swelling and more rapid recovery.
